Mrs. Opal Miller McRay, age 94, 279 Technology Parkway, Rome, formerly of Barron Road, passed away Wednesday morning, March 3, 2010 in a local hospital.
Mrs. McRay was born in Haralson County on October 21, 1915, daughter of the late Walter E. and Lela Jane Drew Miller. She was also preceded in death by her husband in 1995, Chalmers George (Dick) McRay, to whom she was married on June 30, 1934, by 3 sisters, Annis Akins, Evelyn Goss, and Mildred Smith, and by 2 brothers, Olin and Ralph Miller. Mrs. McRay spent most of her life in Floyd County and prior to her retirement, she was employed for many years with State Mutual Insurance Company here in Rome. Mrs. McRay was an avid swimmer and was a member of the Y. M. C. A. She loved baseball and the Rome Braves. At the time of her death, Mrs. McRay was the oldest living member of the Dykes Creek Baptist Church, where she was a member of the T. E. L. Sunday School Class.
Survivors include a son, Steve McRay, and his wife, Mary D., Rome; a sister, Mrs. Myra Thomason, Rome; 2 grandchildren, Mrs. Stephanie McClanahan, and her husband, Russell, Rome, and Mike McRay, and his wife, Judith, Woodbridge, VA; 5 great grandchildren, Rhiannon, Trace, and Billie Ann McClanahan, all of Rome, Matthew Ian McRay, Woodbridge, VA, and Sara Johnson, Chattanooga, TN; nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 2:30pm at the Dykes Creek Baptist Church with her Pastor, the Rev. Mikel Garrett officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the Dykes Creek Baptist Church on Sunday from 1pm until the service hour. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence of the son, Steve McRay, 30 Ford Road, Rome.
Active and honorary pallbearers are requested to assemble at the Dykes Creek Baptist Church on Sunday at 2pm and are as follows: Active: Russell McClanahan, Mike McRay, David Edgerton, Doyal Cape, Ralph White, Jerome Poole, Jerry Emerson, and Andy Thomason. Honorary: Members of the T. E. L. Sunday School Class.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Dykes Creek Baptist Church, 46 Dykes Creek Church Road, Rome, GA 30161.
