Mrs. Jacquelyn Vivian Hammond (Jackie) Smith, age 81, 5 Clarendon Place, NW, Rome, passed away on Sunday morning, July 25, 2010, at a local hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born in Columbia, SC on November 4, 1928, daughter of the late Loftin W. and Doris Elizabeth Turner Hammond. During her career, she was employed with the Social Security Administration and with private Christian schools throughout the United States and abroad. Mrs. Smith was constantly involved in Christian Children's Ministry, wherever her employment took her. Upon moving to Rome in 2000 to be close to family here, she eventually became a member of the Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church where she was involved in the Children's Ministry there as a Sunday School Teacher.

Survivors include her husband, Troy Dean Smith, to whom she was married on October 7, 1994; a daughter, Dr. Cynthia Taylor, and her husband, David Freeman, Villas, NC; a son, Robert Smith, and his wife, Debra, Rome; 3 grandchildren, Jonathan Blake Smith, Rome, Robert Nathan Smith, Rome, and Talia Lee Freeman, Banner Elk, NC; 2 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 11am at the Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church with her Pastor, the Rev. Mac McCurry and the Rev. Bill Atkins officiating. Her son, Robert Smith will deliver a eulogy. Interment will follow there in the Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 until 7pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at each of their respective residences.

Active and honorary pallbearers are requested to assemble at the Pleasant Valley North Baptist Church on Thursday at 10:30am and are as follows: Active: Tony Cooper, Justin Warren, Bill Summer, Hack Summer, David Freeman, and Nathan Summer. Honorary: C. L. and Doris Tate, Bill and Nettie Everett.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Baptist International Missions, for the benefit of Joyce Touchton, Missionary, P. O. Box 9215, Chattanooga, TN 37412.
